Camiguin Governor Xavier Jesus Romualdo said the island’s Quick Response (QR) registration policy is part of the island province’s measure to improve tourism services.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Romualdo said the QR system empowers registered to have streamlined access to different services and accredited accommodations.

“We wanted data-driven governance in planning and promotion. How will you promote Camiguin when you don’t know your demographics?” he asked.

The QR code registration system started during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic as a tool for contact tracing. In March 2023, it was relaunched to register tourists as they visited the island.

However, businessman Paul Rodriguez and some groups filed a petition in court to stop the QR system, claiming it infringes the constitutional right to privacy, especially since residents are also obliged to register.

Romualdo said locals are included in the QR registration to ” segregate the data” on how many local and non-local tourists are traveling within the island.

Ease of doing business

Meanwhile, the Anti-Red Tape Authority recognized the province’s five municipalities – Catarman, Guinsiliban, Mahinog, Mambajao, and Sagay, for successfully implementing the Electronic Business One-Stop Shop (eBoss).

Under Republic Act 11032, or the Ease of Doing Business Law, eBOSS is a single online portal that allows clients to access all necessary services and information for business registration.

This includes submitting applications, online payment, and electronically issuing pertinent documents. (PNA)
