Following a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinal stage of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 on Sunday, January 30, the Philippine women’s football team made history by clinching the country’s first FIFA World Cup berth by defeating Chinese Taipei on penalties, 4-3, in the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.

After a few braves save by goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, Sarina Bolden scored the winning goal for the Philippines in the penalty shoot-out.

In a report from the Asian Football Confederation, the team’s head coach Alen Stajcic weighed in on the historical value of the victory.

The Philippines went to the final four of the continental tournament, alongside Korea, Japan, and China, in addition to winning a spot in the World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

On Thursday, February 3 at 4:00 p.m. (PH time), the Philippines will face South Korea in the semi-finals.
