Filipino photographer John Lorenzo Javier has been recognized in an International Photography Awards (IPA) for his entry showing scenes of “new normal” in the country’s wet market.

The 26-year-old photo titled “Aquarium” has captured a fish vendor in her stall in a public market in Las Piñas City, which made him tap the first prize in one of the six categories under One Shot-Our Times.

According to the IPA’s website describing the photo “a fish vendor has outfitted her stall with a plastic sheet as a makeshift barrier, marked with customer instructions and reminders about guidelines for social distancing.”

“Through March to August of 2020, Metro Manila, Philippines was placed under “Enhanced Community Quarantine” — what was effectively total lockdown — in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, business carried on as usual for essential worker inside public markets, as demand for goods remained the same,” stated in their website.

Javier is a part-time staffer at CNN Philippines and a freelance photographer based in Manila. He finished with a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree majoring in Information Design from the Ateneo De Manila University in 2015.

Javier will receive USD 500 or PHP 24, 900 as of this year’s category winner.

IPA is an annual event showcasing photographers’ leading talents all over the globe. This year’s submission is said to be part of a special edition e-book that will be available online.
