The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday reported the completion of the observation deck and boardwalk that showcases the iconic San Juanico Bridge in Tacloban City.

In a statement, DPWH Region 8 director Allan Borromeo said the PHP19.2-million project involves the construction of a 450-meter suspended deck slab and 80-meter walkway of the monumental landmark in the province of Leyte.

Landscaping works have also been conducted to complement the new tourist attraction.

A storage room was also constructed for the solar generator that will be used to lessen its maintenance costs and energy consumption.

The DPWH said the completion of the view deck has allowed locals and visiting patrons to take beautiful photos safely, do recreational activities, and help generate livelihood opportunities for the people in Leyte.

Before the construction of view deck, tourists used to drive up to San Juanico Bridge and stop at the side of the road just to take pictures and cause road obstructions that can impede traffic flow.

The undertaking was implemented by DPWH – Tacloban City District Engineering Office and it was completed with allocated funding from the 2021 General Appropriations Act. (PNA)
