A fresh take on anonymity.

NGL, which stands for Not Gonna Lie, is an application that lets users send and receive anonymous messages that has been taking over Instagram, especially among young users.

It is targeted at teens and young adults who do not have a space to share their feelings without judgment from friends or societal pressures. The creators believe being anonymous should be fun but at the same time safe for expressing one’s feelings and opinions without shame.

The way the app works is actually very easy. After downloading and opening the application, you are required to provide your Instagram handle, and this will create a link that needs to be copied. You can then post the copied link to your IG story so that people can send you anonymous messages. You can see all the responses via the NGL app in the inbox section and post your reply to an IG story. If you want to get more messages, you can add your ngl.link to your Instagram bio.

The app was developed by a group of California developers in November 2021, but it has only recently gotten the spotlight. It is a free application, but it does have some additional paid features that are only available to Pro members, whereby these members will be able to see hints to recognize who sent the anonymous message.

The subscription tiers are priced at PHP 109.63, PHP 274.90, and PHP 550.35. It is available worldwide and its creators are currently working on translating it to more than 50 languages.

Users are also said to be safe against abuse. NGL uses world-class AI content moderation wherein they utilize deep learning and rule-based character pattern-matching algorithms to filter harmful language and bullying. And in the event of receiving an abusive message, you can tap the report button to either block the sender or email the safety team for additional help.
