Various stamp collections dating from the 1800s are featured in the ongoing philatelic stamp exhibit at the Sta. Barbara Centennial Museum in this Iloilo municipality.

In an interview Tuesday, Sta. Barbara tourism officer and museum director Irene Magallon said the exhibit was first launched as part of the National Heritage Month celebration in May by the Philippine Postal Area VI.

The “Kalayaan ay Pamana” exhibit was opened to the public on Monday in time for the Independence Day celebration.

The collections include historic events, heritage houses and churches, flora and fauna, Philippine heroes, and significant personalities, including coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“It will be displayed in the museum for an indefinite time because we are still waiting for other member museums of the Western Visayas Association of Museums who will be interested to display,” she said.

Magallon hoped they can also bring the exhibit to Capiz and Negros Occidental provinces where they have member museums.

She said the exhibit is significant for the younger generation to learn how to use the stamps and why is it important especially since digital technology has already taken over the old mailing system.

“So probably, we will come up with a seminar with kids on letter writing and sending cards using the old mailing system, how to paste the stamps in envelopes, how to drop in mailboxes as a learning experience for the kids,” she said.

The philatelic stamp exhibit can be viewed Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or on special arrangements during the weekend.

She added those interested may call their office at (033) 523 9955 or message them at the Sta. Barbara Centennial Museum for booking. (PNA)
