Google made an unexpected announcement during the Game Awards 2021, revealing an interesting new initiative that would help bring two platforms closer together: Google Play Games will be available on Windows in 2022.
The firm would allow users to access hundreds of Android games from users’ computers, bringing one of the largest gaming ecosystems from Android to Windows PCs.
“Players will be able to experience their favorite Google Play games on more devices: seamlessly switching between a phone, tablet, Chromebook, and soon, Windows PCs,” Greg Hartrell, Product Director, Games on Android and Google Play announced.
“This Google-built product brings the best of Google Play Games to more laptops and desktops, and we are thrilled to expand our platform for players to enjoy their favorite Android games even more,” the company said, emphasizing that this is not a partnership between the two tech companies, but rather a new product entirely.
As a result of the shift, players will be able to access games from the Google Play Games ecosystem on Android phones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs at the same time and with smooth switching between platforms.
Google didn’t provide many details about how the experience will be for consumers, but we’ll learn more about the planned desktop version in the future.
The Google Play Games ecosystem has over 2.5 billion monthly users and contains some of the top Android games available. When Google Play Games launches on Windows PCs in 2022, it will be created with feedback from Google’s community and developers in mind, resulting in a polished experience.
