The famous line “Bakit parang kasalanan ko?” said by Bea Alonzo in the movie “Four Sisters and a Wedding” has been widely used by many Filipinos to this day. This line originally depicts the pain and the struggle of Bea Alonzo’s character in the film.

The quote came about because there are people who had no choice growing up. They were lead to a place they never wanted and have no choice but to make do with their situation.

But due to the extreme popularity of the line, its real meaning has somehow faded and has gradually turned into an excuse. One great example for this are the people who are in a position of authority. When something bad happens they get to be blamed for it, some would refuse to own up while at the same time, provide countless reasons or excuses, rather. Majority are actually still in this phase where they have yet to learn about the concept of accountability.

While it is acceptable to explain your side, it is not okay to just run away from your responsibilities. If you are in taking the lead in something, running away from conflicts is never the answer.  Having the “Bakit parang kasalanan ko?” mantra will never solve the issue at hand. Saying the line is just simply saying that “it’s not my fault so I won’t do anything about it” which somehow translates to you voluntarily leaving the situation.

Honestly, saying “Bakit parang kasalanan ko?” as a general response must stop. And it’s not just for the people who are in a position, it’s for everyone as well. If we continue on living by these mere words, then no problems will be solved. We must stay true to the real meaning of the line so we can enjoy it for a long time. Besides, the real meaning of the quote says that sometimes, people are forced to be in a situation that they don’t want to be in. Bobby, Bea Alonzo’s character, faced the same predicament but that didn’t stop her from turning the conflict into something beneficial to her. So, instead of using it as an excuse why not use is it as some sort of inspiration?
