The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Taytay Sub-Station and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Taytay District Jail joined a mangrove planting activity in Sitio Minara, Barangay New Guinlo, Taytay, Palawan on Feb. 25.

The initiative was conducted under the Intensified Community Awareness and Response Enforcement (iCARE) program, which seeks to strengthen collaboration among government agencies and local communities in protecting coastal and marine resources.

A total of 70 mangrove propagules were planted along the shoreline to support coastal rehabilitation efforts and help mitigate erosion and climate change impacts.

The activity also aimed to raise public awareness on the vital role of mangroves in sustaining marine biodiversity and serving as natural barriers against storm surges.

Also participating in the activity were personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and various civic-society groups, reflecting a broad-based partnership in advancing environmental protection initiatives in the municipality.

In a statement, BJMP Mimaropa spokesperson JO3 Joefrie Anglo said the bureau’s participation underscores its commitment beyond custodial functions.

“This initiative reflects BJMP’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Beyond our custodial mandate, we actively support programs that protect coastal resources and promote a safer, more sustainable future for our communities,” Anglo said.

The PCG, for its part, said coastal protection efforts form part of its broader mandate to safeguard the marine environment and promote maritime safety, in partnership with stakeholders.

Organizers said the joint undertaking highlights the shared responsibility of government agencies and residents in preserving Palawan’s coastal ecosystems while strengthening community engagement in environmental conservation efforts. (PNA)
