One of the essential factors in perfecting your makeup is considering how your eyes look. Eye makeup isn’t just about using eyeshadow to make your eyes look colorful. Rather, there are other steps you can take to achieve a comprehensive makeup look.

If you’ve been wanting to change your style or simply want to venture into Korean eye makeup, there are certain things you’ll want and need to know as a beginner. Here are the tips you can follow for an easier experience of doing Korean eye makeup:

1. Use Colors Minimally

The key to Korean eye makeup is ensuring that the eyes look brighter and younger without doing too much. The desired result is an overall natural look that only has a few touches of color.

More often than not, Koreans use colors that are neutral or slightly darker than the skin tone, like brown or rose-pink, which match well with the natural complexion. For beginners, brown is the best choice since it’s a shade that suits almost everyone. You can apply this using a brush or even simply with your fingers.

2. Make Your Eyes Pop

Although you’re going for a natural look with your eye colors, there’s no harm in adding an extra pop to your eyes. Using a lighter color with a slight shimmer, put a shade over the center of your eyelid. This will make your eyes more interesting even with neutral colors.

To create the effect of “aegyo sal” (cute eye bags) that Koreans love, you can put the same shade below your lower lash line in the center. Highlighting this area will make you look lively and emphasize your pretty eye smile.

3. Shade The “Holy Trinity”

In Korean eye makeup, there are three V’s or parts around the eye called the “holy trinity.” These are what you need to focus on in this step. With a darker shade of eyeshadow, put color over the outer corner of your eyelid. It should form the shape of an outward-pointing triangle.

When you use a brush, don’t forget to get rid of extra eye shadow by patting it off before spreading it onto the eyelid gently. Make sure to blend thoroughly so it doesn’t build up unevenly and look messy.

Do this again for the eyelid’s inner corner and the outer corner of the lower lash line. Applying a darker color in these three regions will add depth to the overall look of the eyes.

4. Achieve The “Puppy Eye” Look With Your Eyeliner

Since Korean eye makeup prioritizes being “natural,” pencil eyeliners are recommended to create softer, more subtle lines that look natural. But don’t let this limit you, as you’re always free to try out other types of eyeliners that you might find more suitable.

With this eyeliner, try to get that “puppy eye” look. One of Korea’s makeup trends, it is done by drawing the outer end of your line at a slanted angle extending slightly downwards based on the shape of your eyes.

Try switching up the colors of your eyeliner to determine what works best for your personal style and preference. If you want a natural look like Koreans, brown would be your top choice. This is because black typically produces a stronger look that’s noticeable when you compare both directly.

5. Curl Your Eyelashes And Apply Mascara

After everything else, curling the eyelashes and applying mascara is the last remaining step. Remember that your eyelash curler should match your eye shape. Similarly, consider your eyelash type when choosing a mascara. It should be able to add length and/or volume to your eyelashes. Using the right mascara, put it over your upper and lower lashes when you’re done curling.

As a beginner, you may find these steps easy or difficult at first. But it’s definitely not impossible to achieve, especially if you practice a lot. Keeping the basics in mind will help you naturally incorporate them into your everyday makeup routine.
