In an era where high-intensity workouts and gym memberships once dominated the fitness scene, Gen Z is redefining what it means to stay active. For many in this cohort, the simple act of walking, often accompanied by a favorite playlist or podcast, has become an easy way to get a workout everyday.

Dubbed “cozy cardio,” this trend emphasizes low-impact, enjoyable movement over strenuous workouts. It often involves walking on a treadmill or around the neighborhood while engaging in comforting activities like watching a favorite show or sipping an iced cold coffee. The goal is to make exercise feel less like a chore and more like a self-care routine.

Beyond physical health, walking serves as a mental health booster and a means of social connection for Gen Z. Trends like the “Hot Girl Walk,” popularized on social media, encourage individuals to use walking time for positive affirmations and goal setting. Some even jog or walk around to ease their minds, distracting them from their concerns in life, or even an easy way to burn out excessive energy.

One of the key appeals of walking for Gen Z is its accessibility. Unlike gym memberships or specialized equipment, walking requires minimal resources, making it an inclusive option for many. Whether it’s a quick stroll during a study break or a longer walk to decompress after work, the flexibility of walking fits seamlessly into diverse lifestyles.

Some of the songs in my “Hot Girl Walk” playlist include:

  1. Blow – Kesha
  2. MUTT – Leon Thomas
  3. C’mon Loretta – Trixie Mattel
  4. Multo – Cup of Joe
  5. OTW – Khalid Feat. 6LACK & Ty Dolla $ign
  6. Déjà vu – NCT Dream
  7. Take Off – WayV
  8. Defying Gravity – Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel (Yes, the original!)
  9. Torpe – AJAA
  10. PSG – Al James

As Gen Z continues to prioritize holistic well-being, their embrace of walking and cozy cardio reflects a broader shift towards sustainable, enjoyable, and mentally nourishing forms of exercise. In their view, every city becomes walkable when accompanied by a charged pair of earphones and the right mindset.
