The province of Dinagat Islands celebrated Wednesday the “Bugkosan sa Isla” Festival, a major highlight of this year’s 19th Charter Day that touts the province’s economic success.

“Bugkosan sa Isla,” which means “to bind, unite, merge, or gather,” commemorates the creation of Dinagat as the fifth province in the Caraga Region and serves as a thanksgiving for the successes the people and the province have achieved.

Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. said the festival reminds residents that progress is possible when they come together.

“The festival reminds us that progress is possible when we come together, the local governments, communities, and every Dinagatnon, toward one goal: a brighter, more resilient province,” he said in a message.

He noted that one of the province’s key triumphs is its economic growth.

Data recently released by the Philippine Statistics Authority indicated that the Dinagat Islands experienced the fastest economic growth in the Caraga Region in 2024 and ranked fourth nationwide.

“The Bugkosan Festival is a powerful symbol of unity, gratitude, and shared purpose, and a heartfelt tribute to the strength of our people and the spirit that binds us together,” Demerey said.

In a separate statement, the Dinagat Islands Provincial Tourism and Cultural Office (PTCO) said the festival is a story of the island’s roots, struggles, and triumphs, featuring colorful contingents and merging tradition with innovation. (PNA)
