The Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte (CGSSDN) led the planting of more than 3,000 mangrove propagules across a 10-hectare coastal area it adopted in Barangay Nabago, Surigao City on Friday as part of the command’s 125th founding anniversary celebration.

Personnel from other government agencies, including the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Surigao del Norte, joined the one-day environmental activity.

Barangay officials and other city stakeholders also supported and participated in the mangrove planting activity.

“The planting of mangrove propagules aims to contribute to the restoration, protection, and preservation of the coastal ecosystem in Barangay Nabago,” Lieutenant Junior Grade Roy Christopher Orillaneda, CGSSDN station commander, said in a statement on Friday.

Orillaneda also acknowledged the support from mining companies Pacific Nickel Philippines Inc. and Platinum Group Metals Corp., which provided the mangrove propagules used in the activity.

“Their generous support highlights the importance of collaboration among government agencies, private organizations, and local communities in advancing environmental conservation initiatives,” Orillaneda said.

Held in conjunction with the Philippine Coast Guard’s anniversary, the mangrove planting also aimed to strengthen environmental awareness and promote shared responsibility and collective action among maritime stakeholders in the area, he added.

“The CGSSDN affirms its continued commitment to safeguard the maritime domain, not only through safety and security operations but also through meaningful environmental protection undertakings,” Orillaneda said.

This year’s PCG anniversary celebration carries the theme: “One Sea, One Mission, One Legacy: 125 Years of Guarding the Nation’s Maritime Future.” (PNA)
