Aside from fresh flowers, artificial flowers are also in demand in this provincial capital of Benguet as Valentine’s Day nears.

Stall owner Cecilia Chamos said some opt to buy flowers made of paper and thread, which are cheaper and can be kept as souvenirs, unlike fresh flowers that eventually wilt.

“There are also those who buy the artificial ones, which they also asked to be made as a bouquet that comes with chocolates or stuffed toys,” Chamos said in Ilocano during an interview Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, bouquets with long-stemmed roses are priced from PHP500 to PHP1,500, depending on the size and other features while prices of artificial flowers range from PHP250 for a small bouquet to PHP500 or PHP600, if combined with stuff toys.

Aside from roses, orchids, gerbera, tulips, mums, giant sunflowers, stargazers, carnations and other kinds are also available in addition to roses grown in the town.

Chamos, who has been selling flowers for decades, said the artificial flowers at her stall are made by her grandchildren and nieces who learned the art of making through watching video clips on YouTube.

Chamos said she is glad that young people in her family have found ways to use their artistic talents to make a living.

She said they also explore using other materials to make artificial flowers that can be sold simultaneously with fresh flowers. (PNA)
