Shawn Mendes Postpones World Tour, Citing Mental Health Issues

Canadian singer and hitmaker Shawn Mendes announced on Friday that he is postponing his ongoing “Wonder” world tour for three weeks until further notice to focus on his mental health.

The announcement came through the singer’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts, stating that he had “hit a breaking point” and would take a break from his concert activities.

“This breaks my heart to have to say this, but unfortunately, I’m going to have to postpone the next three weeks of shows through Uncasville, CT, until further notice,” Mendes wrote.

“I’ve been touring since I was 15, and to be honest, it’s always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family,” he added.

While the 23-year-old Grammy-nominated singer “felt ready to dive back in” after spending “a few years off the road,” Mendes stated that the decision was premature and that the “toll of the road and pressure has caught up to me.”

The singer also shared that he made the decision after speaking with his team and health professionals.

“I need to take some time to heal and take care of myself and my mental health, first and foremost. As soon as there are more updates, I promise I will let you know love you guys,” Mendes assured his fans.

This wasn’t the first time Mendes shared that he’s going through some tough times in his personal life. In his last Twitter post on April 20, 2022, the singer posted a screenshot with a lengthy message sharing his true feelings and how he “constantly feels like he’s either flying or drowning” and that he’s “overwhelmed and overstimulated.”

Mendes wrote that he wants to be his true, unique self, but it’s a struggle and that even with so much success, he feels like he’s failing.

But he ended the message with an assurance to his fans that he’s okay and just wanted to share, hoping that maybe some people could resonate with him.

The singer’s “Wonder The World Tour” kicked off in Portland, Oregon, on June 27 to promote his 2020 fourth studio album, Wonder. He recently released his single “When You’re Gone,” which dropped on March 31.

According to the Wonder World Tour website, Mendes’ scheduled shows covered by his 3-week break will be Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Washington D.C., and Connecticut.

Meanwhile, the tour is scheduled to resume in Canada at the end of July to finish the North American leg before proceeding with European shows in 2023.

On July 7, Shawn Mendes shared on his social media accounts that Disney+ is sponsoring the tour and he is working with them to make their initiative happen. The singer revealed they are visiting select children’s hospitals in the U.S. and that his foundation will give wonder grants to young changemakers in North America.

It is also worth noting that the Wonder World Tour aims to make its concert shows more sustainable. The singer disclosed their plan on the tour’s website to reduce its environmental impact and emissions by working with climate and tour sustainability experts Hope Solutions and to reduce their carbon footprint and become a fully climate-positive tour.

The postponed spots are yet to be rescheduled, but the website noted that fans should “hold on to your tickets as they will be valid for the new date.”
