A Catholic prelate on Tuesday urged members of the clergy and the public to work together against dengue by ensuring clean surroundings.
Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio, a member of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Health Care (CBCP-ECHC), said the church and the people should work hand in hand to stop the spread of illness by destroying the breeding sites of mosquitos.
“What the church can do is to tell people that virals like this will not spread if we join our efforts together. Let us clean our surroundings,” he said.
“At home, perhaps they can also have some preventive measures. It might be in their indoor plants or whatever. The point is we help in whatever way we can whenever they are needed. Let’s join hands together,” the Military Ordinariate said.
He also expressed concern over the reported dengue outbreak in some parts of the country.
“I am alarmed in the outbreak of dengue. But though there was no national alarm yet we should not be indifferent either,” Florencio said.
On Monday, the Department of Health-Center for Health Development in Region 6 with the concurrence of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, declared a dengue outbreak in Western Visayas, except for Negros Occidental, which will be placed on alert status.
The DOH regional data showed that from January to July 6, 2019, the region has recorded 15,746 cases and 87 deaths due to dengue.
Among four provinces in Western Visayas, Guimaras recorded the highest increase at 1,030 percent. It experienced a spike in dengue cases in 2010, 2013 and 2016.
In 2010, the dengue cases for the whole year reached 27,264 with 137 deaths; 22,392 with 69 deaths in 2013; and 26,440 cases and 88 deaths in 2016. (PNA)
